I was in Colorado to winterize The Box and take in some fall colors. And, as usual, I traveled Boreas Pass, where Pam’s mother’s ashes are distributed. I have a lot of photos get to!
The first morning I was there was a frosty one. This was the view from our driveway across South Park:
As you can see, there was fresh snow on the mountain tops and a bit of frost on the grasses. While it later warmed up into the 50s, it was a chilly start to the day.
One of my first tasks is to get water for The Box. A stop on the road to the pump yielded this photo.
My second outing was to Breckenridge via Boreas Pass. Long-time readers of this blog will know we have history with this pass. (A Boreas Pass Gallery is currently posted with more details.)
The Forest Service had done some maintenance over the last year with both the cabin and roadhouse receiving new metal roofs, fresh coats of stain on the logs, and fresh caulking between the logs. It was satisfying to see the upkeep.
Unfortunately, the peak of fall color had passed by my trip but there was still color along the way. Here is a photo of Mt. Silverheels from the Boreas Pass road:
I always enjoy going over Boreas Pass, but that is not the only trip I took this time.
Southwest of The Lot is the town of Salida, distance of about 45 miles by car. There are many back-road trails in that area, many suitable for travel in a high-clearance vehicle. I did not have my ATV along this trip as I intended to bring home many items from the shed and would not have room for The Griz (my Yamaha 550 Grizzly ATV), so I was limited to trails that the truck could tackle.
My “exploring” trips yielded many photos, including these. Isn’t that Colorado sky a rich blue?!
Then there was this sunset on the day before I began my return trip home.
As I mentioned earlier, I had a truck load of items to bring home from The Lot, and was towing the chipper home as well.
This is why we have a truck! The ride home was uneventful, but fuel prices, which ranged from around $3.90 to $4.67 per gallon, made this an expensive trip. The truck gets less than 16 mpg.
The last few days I have been catching up on lawn / leaf work, unpacking from the trip, and getting back into my normal routine. I will begin splitting wood again and preparing to deliver a load to Felicity later this month.
One hitch has popped up concerning our health insurance. Our supplemental “add-on” policy will not be offered next year, a result of this administration’s screwing with Social Security and Medicare. We now have to go on the hunt for a new policy for each of us, a chore I am not looking forward to undertaking.
I will be putting together a full gallery of this fall’s Colorado trip as I took many more photos than included in this post. I will leave a note when it is completed and posted.
Addendum: Fall Color gallery has been posted!
That’s it for now. Thanks for looking in!
Pam’s Penny
The latest scourge of freshly-hatched gnats and I have been trim painting on the porches. Sometimes I think most of the wood on the porches is held together by paint alone. (New paint on old wood = lipstick on a pig.)
