Thanks…and life goes on

Thanks to everyone who posted a comment or e-mailed us about our “Colorado Dream” land search. Its nice to know you are interested enough to respond! I’ve created a new search category (see Categories at the right side of the page) called Land Hunt. Use the category feature to follow posts on a given topic, rather than looking at all posts. Of course, right now there are only 2 land search posts! 🙂 There will be more, I’m sure.

In the mean time, life goes on. Both of us are suffering from colds, not fun. Our out-door time has been curbed by snow(!) and hard freezes. We have been trying to cover most of our plants nightly, but don’t know, yet, what survived and what didn’t. Below-freezing temperatures are forcast for the next 3 nights, with a chance of snow or rain during the days. Such un-Spring like weather is hard to take!

This weekend looks to be a “chores to do around-the-house” kind of weekend. Jer needs to change oil and filters in both cars and wash them, get the lawn weed-whacked and mowed if possible, and then there is the regular stuff like grocery shopping.

Getting groceries is a bit of a chore for us, as our favorite place, and nearest full-line store, is about 30 miles away in Grand Junction. We typically run a few errands (including Wal-world), get groceries, and get gasoline all in the same trip. Getting gasoline consists of fillling up the car, and normally filling up Jer’s extra gas cans. On a bad day we purchase upwards of 30 – 34 gallons of fuel. The car that doesn’t make it to the gas station gets fueled from the gas cans. Since our local station is generally 25 – 40 cents per gallon higher than “in town” we can save arouund $8 – $15 per week  by getting fuel in Grand Junction. Jer says his using the gas cans is his form of “couponing”.

Thats about it for this entry. Thanks for checking in!

Colorado dream…continued

Pam and I took another trip to the area west of Colorado Springs where we are looking for our “dream” land. Having a cabin in the woods in Colorado has long been a dream of ours, and we are finally starting to pursue it.

We had one lot in particular to look at, and a few others in the same general area that may prove to be of interest. This trip  would also give us the opportunity to drive through more of  our target area.

Basically, we are looking for a lot that is big enough to separate us from neighbors, has a view, preferably of mountains, but valleys and trees would be OK as a second choice. Lot needs to have some trees on it, and it would be nice to have some open meadow area. A flat spot to build is on the list of plusses, and access to a local community for groceries and gas would be great. Pam says she wants it to be within 30 minutes of a hospital as we are not as young as we used to be. No off the side of a side road, although we started by  looking at some lots that were pretty remote. All this on a budget…it won’t be easy to find!

We left Friday afternoon and drove to a suburb of Denver and had dinner with our son Toby. We talked for a couple hours, then headed to our hotel room. Early Saturday we got started on our land visit.

Normally temperatures are in the upper 60’s this time of year. We had 28 degrees and snow. The low cloud cover made it impossible to determine what views each lot had. Still, we headed off to our first address.

We were pleasantly welcomed by a Mountain Bluebird, and a couple rabbits took off as the dogs approached. Chittering sounds in a large Ponderosa pine were tracked to an Aberts tuft-eared squirrel.

We saw Mountain Bluebirds in the trees. (U.S. Forest Service photo.)

Only real drawback is that the lot is steeper than we would like.

Pam thinks: "Driveway here?"

Pam and Bru walk the lot. Blondie, our other dog, was near Jerry.

The Aspen trees are not yet leafed out, but this allowed us to see some of the lot’s other features, like the rock outcroppings.

The realtor took this “view” photo on a better day from the top of the lot

Elevation is, we think, is in the upper 8,000 foot range.

As a plus, there is a small (!) all-season stream at the front of the lot. It feeds a few small ponds in the area.

While we were driving around we saw other wildlife, including a fox with pointed ears and a beautiful tail, many deer, and ducks swimming on some of the ponds.

Many deer in the area!

The property is about 10 miles from the nearest town so meets another of our “wish list” criteria. However, it is pretty steep, and getting a driveway to the building site at the top of the lot would be, well, interesting! As for now, the search continues, but this lot is a contender.

Web page updates

I added a video clip of Blondie and Bru (our dogs) playing tug-of-war to the Dogs page. Felicity had directed me to a service called Cincopa that makes generating code for galleries, slide shows, and playing video clips much easier than it had been. The tug-of-war video clip and the slide show on my XS 11 page are the result of using the Cincopa service. I get a kick out of seeing them work, and will be incorporating more of the same in the future.

I’ve made a few other minor changes to several of the pages, including getting the background image to load faster. Other changes include centering the navigation links on both the tops and bottom of each page, and some general clean-up work. I’m beginning to understand HTML a little better!

Tax day and other stuff

Well, today is Tax Day. Actually, we sent our Fed and State taxes in last week.

Spring is definitely here…the cherry tree started blooming. So have the dandelions. 🙂

Pam and I were out doing yard work and Pam decided we needed a photo of us with our 2 dogs, Blondie and Bru.

Blondie is brown-and-white, Bru (short for Brunette) is the smaller black-and-white dog. They realy enjoy being outside on days like this.

It sure is nice to have warmer weather arriving. We even unpacked the lawn chairs and spend a little time just sitting on the deck.

Jerry got to play with some of his toys, as we helped a friend clean up a couple Aspen trees that had come down in a strong wind. Jerry cut up the trees with his chain saw, chipped the remaining branches with his chipper-shredder, and then we hauled the wood to another  friend who heats a shed with a wood-burning stove. The shed houses an animal rescue effort, so we considered the work to be a “good deed” for all concerned.

Looking for Land

For some time, Pam and I have been toying with the idea of trying to find some “recreational” land to be used for weekend get-aways. Lately we have begun looking at listings and visiting parcels that may be of interest.

Some of these listings are “creative writing” at its best. “Lakes” are small ponds, “sloping” meens steep, and “View” happens only if you are looking up at the stars. None the less, there have been a couple spots that may be candidates.

You learn to look at the details. One lot had a discrepancy in the driveway easement; the easement ended about 30 feet short of the propterty line! Oh well. It was a nice lot, too.

We are looking in the area west of Colorado Springs, on the theory that there would be enough services available so that one day we might actually retire to that area. We are avoiding gated communities and lots of less than an acre or so…Pam does not want neighbors close by. Jerry wants enough room to put up a pole shed to house his “toys” and other gear, so 2+ acres is one of the basic requirements.

The dogs enjoy these trips, as it is about the only time they have been able to get into the woods and smell deer and other wild animals. They don’t know what to make of most of it, but they have fun walking the parcels with us.

The search continues. More on this project as we progress.

Another addition

I’ve added a new tab to the home page: Jerry’s Toys. As you might expect, this covers Jerry’s recreational toys: His Scout II 4×4, motorcycle, and snowmobile. Take a look.

This should be the last major page added to this site. Other pages, covering special topics or events, will be added as we go along.

More changes

I’ve added a new link to our home page…Kids. This link will take you to a brief description of our 2 children, including a photo of each. I refreshed some of the text on our main page as well. Next to come…Jerry’s Toys.

New web pages – a learning experience

I’ve added 2 new web pages (and tabs on the home page) that show our cats and dogs. Take a look!

Figuring out Web code can be – aahhhh – interesting. The pages look OK, but there is to much empty space on the Cats page. I’ll be looking into ways to make it more compact.

Running an older Mac, I’m finding that I need to upgrade to take advantage of newer programs that can handle HTML 5 and Style Sheets. Its a bit frustrating, in fact. However, I’ll plod along until I can afford to upgrade. I guess it will be a challenge to see how far I can go with what I have, a Powermac G4.

In the mean time, I hope you enjoy these new pages.
